SPLASH NEWS TERM 2 2010

It's time to fill you in on what's happening. Its newsletter time!
Hi to all families and swimmers. Term 2 2010 has flown past as usual and it's unbelievable and encouraging to think we are heading towards a break!
I am so pleased we decided to cut this term short to make it just the 10 weeks duration. It has been a long and very busy Term 2. We have been quite fortunate with the weather as it has been quite mild compared to this time last year!
As usual week 7 is the time when we start gearing up for the following term.
Sorting out levels, session teachers hours etc.
Hence this newsletter!
As always we have some important news and dates to pass onto you all.
Firstly to all you Monday swimmers please note there is NO lesson next Monday due to it being Queens Birthday.
This week is week 7 of a 10 week term.
Assessments are being carried out at this week for all swimmers.
As you can see on the top right hand side of this newsletter we have ticked the box regarding your child's assessment results.
If your child is to be rolled over he or she is required to repeat the
current level again in order to consolidate his or her skills in order to progress further.
See note further on in the newsletter with regards to the learning process.
If he or she is to Advance we feel the skills achieved to dater are solid and sound enough to progress and grasp the next required level of development.
ROLLED OVER BOOKING
If your child has been Rolled over it means they have been booked to attend at the same level, day and time for Term 3 2010. It doesn't always mean that the teacher will be the same. *See note later on.
Rolled over Bookings MUST be confirmed by Sunday 13th June. Payments and confirmation for these bookings can be made anytime from now.
For a booking to be confirmed we must receive the full payment.
If by Sunday the 13th June we haven't received payment (confirmation) we will assume the booking isn't required for Term 3 and the booking will be deleted.
ADVANCED BOOKING
If your child has advanced they are ready to go ‘up' to the next level for their next block of lessons.
Check the board at reception for the level times etc.
A transferred booking is a booking that has been changed (day or time) for various reasons.
Bookings can be made from Week 9 Monday 13th June onwards.
Keep an eye on the website www.swimminglessons.co.nz for our class and session timetable.
This can be found under the sessions tab.
Also sessions and times will be up on the notice board here at the pool from Monday 6th June.
TEACHER CHANGES
Please note that although we do our best to keep the same teachers for each session and day. This at times is not possible due to the teachers other commitments and schedules.
This term there are some changes as we now have Raewynn back.
Lisa who has been filling in for Raewynn will no longer have any regular classes. She may from time to time fill in for us though.
She's been great and we will all be sad to see her go.
Please check the session's board for schedule and class information regarding this. Some children bond to a particular teacher and it can be a difficult transition if this is the case. Especially at preschool level.
Please take note that weeks 8 and 9 can be very busy with bookings coming in and there may be some delays.
Please try and be patient or come in early. From week 9 (June 14th) we will be here from 8.45am.
Alternatively you can email us klts@xtra.co.nz if you are unable to come in. This method of booking is slower for you depending on the volume we receive. But we are happy to assist you if you are unable to come in.
We will contact you by reply email.
Payment must be received on the next banking day for any booking to be confirmed.
IMPORTANT DATES
Please note Monday 7th June (next week) there will be no lesson.
Term 2 lessons finish on the week ending Sunday 27th June. Please note that the School term still has another week to run. As I said earlier in the newsletter we cut the term short 1 week to allow any of our teachers to take annual leave and also to carry out some maintenance on the pool. It also allows us to have a break!
TERM 3 2010
Commences Monday July 19th and finishes up on Sunday September 24th. Term 3 is 10 weeks duration and costs $125- per child.
July School Holiday blocks will be run right throughout both weeks of the July school holidays.
There will be 2 X 5 lesson blocks. Dates are inclusive and as follows:
JULY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS
Block 1:
Monday 5th → July 9th
Block 2:
Monday 12th → July 16th
Cost $65-
These classes are an excellent way to boost any swimmers progress at any level. We will have most classes available except pre-school Duckling, Waterbaby Aquatot and Kingfish.
WEEK TIMETABLE
Week 7:
31st May → 6th June
We are currently at week 7.
Newsletters will be issued (where we can) to all families this week.
All swimmers will be assessed and results printed onto the top tight hand side of this newsletter.

We will be taking photos of all the Water babies and Aquatot's for their certificates. Distribution of all these certificates will be week 10.
Please tell us if you are going to be away.
We do our best to get every body's photo. We will have the camera on hand every day until the end of the term for this reason.

Bookings open for all Advanced, transferred and School Holiday blocks.
Week 10:

Bookings open to all new families joining the Kapiti Learn To Swim system.
For anyone wanting to pay for their lessons via internet banking Kapiti Learn To Swims account number is: 020733 0008106.00 please ensure you name your payment
Kapiti Learn To Swim will be closed from Monday 28th June. Re-opening Monday 5th July.
Donna and Sophie will be taking these classes.
Classes start at 9am and will be finished by approximately 1pm.
MAKE UP LESSONS
We offer 1 make-up lesson per baby/aqua-tot at water baby and Aqua-tot level only. The requirement is that the child must be sick for the make- up to be valid. We do rely on your honesty with this. Just lately the make up system has been abused.
Please know that there is only 1 make up allowed per child.
We are unable to accommodate children without knowing where the vacancies are (when you ring in) as I'm sure you can understand there are limits on how many people we can have in a class at any one time. Some Swim School's don't offer make-ups at any level for this reason.
We don't want to compromise the quality of our lessons for other swimmers. Here at KLTS we have stopped make-up lessons at all other levels for this reason.
Please be aware of our rule with this and the reasoning behind it.
THEFT
We have had a spate of theft lately.
I feel it is important to mention as this trend is very disturbing.
We have had my tin gecko stolen off the fence to the right of the house. This has happened in the last 2 weeks.
We have also noticed that the lost property if regularly taken.
If we find anything now (of value) we will hold onto it.
If you have lost anything please ask us as we can no longer put it into the lost property.
We are unable to take responsibility for any item left behind. It is your responsibility to name your clothing/caps/goggles. We will ring you if you have a name.
We can't help but be disturbed about the message this practice of ‘taking what's not yours' is giving the children.
It is a real worry. These children are our next generation!
SOME HELPFUL LEARN TO SWIM MESSAGES!
Often we are asked questions with regards to the learn to swim process. I have listed some ‘myths' that may help you understand the reasons behind our learn to swim program.
Myth - Learn to swim is a sport
Fact - Learning to swim is an educational process. Once you have learnt to swim you can then use these skill's to enjoy the sport of swimming.
Learning to swim is first and foremost about becoming safer in the water and should not be considered as a "sport" to be replaced by other sports and activities.
We believe being an Island nation learning to swim should be a skill that is vital for any child's survival.
It is a parent's responsibility now to ensure their child gets these skills.
Whilst other after school activities are important for all rounded self esteem and development of children. The other activites aren't life saving.
This message is one that New Zealand Water Safety council is encouraging all Swim Schools in New Zealand to push. It is a sad fact that 1 in 5 New Zealand children under the age of twelve are unable to swim 200 meters.
This statistic is not one we can be proud of.

Myth - My kids need a break from lessons.
Fact - Many children have just the one half hour lesson per week, this is a very, very small amount of time from which to need a break. Having a break can be counter productive as skills, if not well reinforced will simply deteriorate and then need to be re-learnt when the child returns.
Myth - My child's not progressing
Fact - When a child is learning a new skill there will always be times where no apparent progress can be seen. The apparent lack of progress does not mean learning has stopped, or that the child is truly going backwards.
When learning new skills, neural pathways between muscles, joints and brain need to be laid down, strengthened and remembered.
This takes a lot of regular practice.
It's not always possible to see when learning is taking place. Peaks and troughs along the way are a perfectly natural part of learning and there will be times when a child needs a lot of support and encouragement.
When you see a period of rapid progress, know that this will be followed by a period of consolidation where you may not see any measurable improvement.
Myth - Swimming in winter gives colds and flues!
Fact - Colds and flues are viruses. Children are at no greater risk of catching a cold from swimming lessons than from any other public place such as schools, childcare, shopping and or playing with their mates!
Do be sure though that your child is warmly dressed when leaving the pool on wintry nights.
Myth - All ear infections come from swimming.
Fact - While outer ear infections can be caused from swimming in poor quality water, inner ear infections are generally unrelated to swimming.
Myth - Children will learn to swim when they start school swimming.
Fact - School swimming alone usually dosen't offer enough practice for children to master swimming. Where possible always attend both school and private swimming lessons. The more exposure the better!

EAR PLUGS
For swimmers who suffer persistently from ear problems it is often very difficult to find a suitable ear plug that will keep the ear canal dry.
We have a high number of swimmers at any one time enrolled who suffer from glue ear and who have grommets inserted.
One of our parents David Tayler is an audiologist. When he was in the UK he regularly made ear plugs specifically to fit the individual swimmers ear. It is always difficult to get a retail available ear plug to fit. Some swimmers never find one. I would strongly recommend you give David a ring and get a set made that is specific to your child so that the ear canal can be 100% dry. He can be contacted on 04 2934877.
Alternatively we have just got onto a ‘bees wax' type of plug that we have found excellent. They are made locally and of natural ingredients.
CORRECT EQUIPMENT
If you have a child who is suffering with leaking goggles, it may be that they are not fitted properly or are of inferior quality. As teachers it can be time consuming and frustrating if a swimmer is constantly ‘emptying' out goggles.
If the goggles are of good quality and fit properly they shouldn't leak.
Please ensure your child's google's fit well and work well so that we can enhance their performance in the water.
The goggles we sell are a silicone seal and are designed especially for Learn to Swim.
Please talk to us at reception and we will advise which model is most suitable and we will also fit these for you.
Goggle distraction can be avoided with a good quality, fitted pair of goggles.
MAKE-UP LESSONS FAECAL OR VOMIT INCIDENTS
If the pool has to close because of either of the above incidents Kapiti Learn To Swim will provide a make-up lesson.
From time to time this does happen. Fortunately it is not too common. However we do our very best to accommodate every child who has missed a lesson because of this kind of incident.
BORROWING OF EQUIPMENT
Please note that we are happy to lend you a pair of goggles or a hat if you have inadvertently left yours behind. However we have people regularly using our equipment. This is not practical or hygienic. Please ensure your children have their own gear.
Goggles are an individual thing. One size or style doesn't always fit everyone.
COLD WATER AVAILABLE
We always have cold water available free to anyone who brings a bottle or their own cup - more eco friendly! Please do not use the thermal cups from the coffee machine. These are for heated coffee only. They are expensive and it is not at all cost effective for the child to use them for water.
SWIMMERS FITNESS
It is highly recommended that you encourage your children to join a team sport over the winter months. The benefits are huge in terms of team spirit and fitness. Swimming is an excellent stamina base for any kind of sport. So it makes sense that all swimmers stay active in any way they can.
It has been proven time and time again that those families, who take their children to the pool as much as possible to play and practice, exit out of our system much earlier than those swimmers who don't have that extra exposure to aquatic activities.
SECOND HAND WETSUITS
There is always a demand at this time of the year for wetsuits suitable for swimming. These can be very costly (if you can source them) brand new.
If you have a wetsuit at home that doesn't fit your child any longer bring it in and we will sell on your behalf. Ensure that the sleeves are an insert of lycra not neoprene so that the arms can turn freely. Some children feel the cold and would benefit from a wetsuit.
We hope you have a lovely relaxing and warm July school holiday period.
On behalf of us all here at Kapiti Learn To Swim
Mandi, Raewynn, Donna, Sophie, Kate, Jacqui, Monique and Lisa enjoy the rest of the school term.
All the best

Mess in boys toilets and damage to changing rooms.

We have had a real spate of vandalism in the boys changing rooms. Whilst this hasn’t been as bad as last term. The last 3 weeks we have had a problem with toilet rolls being put down the toilet. The changing rooms being paper bombed and also loo paper strewn around and all over. The consumption of loo paper has increased drastically!
We have also had a lot of piddling into the toilet roll holders etc. Please supervise your children as we are trying to be vigilant but we are missing the ‘rat bags', and so consequently we aren’t getting on top of it. The sign that was screwed onto the wall has also been pulled off and ruined.

If your child can be ‘mischief’ please take them home and get them changed, Now that it's warming up this option is more viable.

Please try and supervise any children you may have that aren’t in the pool. We are finding the toys we use for teaching are being removed from behind the screen and thrown around or taken home. Also children are sitting with their feet in the pool whilst lessons are in progress.
Sorry to sound so negative here but it is becoming a problem that we are sure we can all stamp out.

Some helpful learn to swim myths!
Often we are asked questions with regards to thlearn to swim process. I have listed some ‘myths’ that may help you understand the reasons behind our learn to swim program.

Make up classes
Makeups are available at Aquatot level and Waterbaby level for sickness only. If you are allocated a make up and then don’t attend we do not re-allocate another make-up.
Second hand wetsuits
There is a demand for wetsuits suitable for swimming. These can be very costly (if you can source them) brand new. Talk to us at reception if you are unclear on this.
What really helps your child’s progress is taking them to the pools often to let them play and practice what they have learnt with us. We know you are all so busy but it’s a cheap way to keep them busy, fit and healthy.

Over the summer holidays.
All public pools in the Kapiti area have a policy that all under 4 year olds wear a swimmers nappy.
We have some ‘funky bum’ recyclable nappies on sale at a reduced rate of $20- which works out a lot cheaper than disposables.
Well I think that’s all the news for now.
Please ask at reception if you are unclear on any of the information in this newsletter.
Thank-you all for your loyalty over 2009 and here’s hoping we all have a lovely long hot summer, with lots of swimming!
On behalf of us all here at Kapiti Learn To Swim have a wonderful break.
We want to see you all back safe and happy in the new year.

Merry Xmas to you all!!
All the best

2009 Term 3
SPLASH' NEWS TERM 3 2009

Hi to all families and swimmers. Term 3 2009 has flown past as usual and it's unbelievable and encouraging to think we are heading towards summer. I say bring it on! It really has been a long winter for lots of reasons.Term 3 has been a very busy term for all of us here, It has been long in duration at 10 weeks, and definitely colder than the average. There has been the normal amount of sickness but overall I think we have all coped well.
As usual we have a lot of news and dates to pass onto you.
This week is week 7 of a 10 week term.
Assessments will be carried out from Monday 31st August and will continue on until Saturday 5th September.
We are short staffed this week as Raewynn is away and so there are nights where we have no receptionist. I am sorry about this. If you know your child will be away or unwell please ring us and we will arrange for them to be assessed on their return, if need be.

Price increase
It is unfortunate that we have had to increase our fees.
We have had all our main suppliers increase in the last 18 months. It doesn't seem right I know during a recession but these costs are too difficult to absorb for us without us passing that cost on. Our main increases have been chemicals and the gas cost as always!
Any bookings made for September/October holidays and Term 4 will cost as follows:

Holiday Block $65 per week 5 lessons) per swimmer
Term 4 2009 $125- per swimmer (10 weeks)

BOOKING SYSTEM FORMAT
Last Term was the first term that we operated a ‘roll over' booking system.
We have altered our system to try and simplify it further and we have ironed some of the ‘glitches' out.
It is not easy with the number of swimmers we have to completely please everyone. We wish we could! So please feel free to offer us any further ideas if you think we can simplify and accommodate you all better. We are keen to ‘streamline' the system as best we can! The system is as follows:

Week 7: 31st August → 5th September.
All swimmers will be assessed and a Rolled over notice or an Advanced notice will be EMAILED out to you all. This notice is to tell you the results of the assessment. If you don't have a current email address please come to reception so we can tell you the results of you swimmer and what you should do to confirm your booking.
If you don't receive an email from us by Sunday 6th please tell reception your current email address so that we can check our records.
If you child has rolled over we will also email you out the details of their booking. Remember please that this Booking Confirmation is only 100% confirmed once payment has been received.
You can pay on receipt of this if you wish, by internet banking. The account details are on the sheet.
Any rolled over booking not paid for (even a small deposit will secure it) will be deleted Sunday 13th September. To make way for all advanced, new bookings and transferred bookings.

Please read the sheet carefully as last term quite a few people didn't realise they had to come up to reception and pay on receipt of this letter, for the booking to be confirmed. Their booking had consequently been deleted.
If your child is to be Rolled over their notification via email will be pink.
If your child is to Advance a level their Advance notification via email will be green.
With an advanced level Booking you must wait until the following week September 14th to book or transfer.
At this stage please notify reception immediately if you intend missing Term 4 or you want to change any of the details of a rolled over booking.

Week 8: September 7th → 12th.
Rolled over bookings are being confirmed and paid for.

Week 9: September 14th → 19th.
All advanced Bookings, New bookings and transferred bookings will be taken this week.
This is done on a first come first served basis. Starting Monday 14th September at 8.30am.
Please remember Term 4 is a very sought after Term and places go extremely quickly.

You can email us klts@xtra.co.nz if you are unable to come in. This way is slower for you as the volume is huge but we are happy to try our best to find you a spot this way. We will contact you by reply email.
Payment must be received on the next banking day for any booking to be confirmed.

All sessions available will be posted onto the web and also onto our notice board here at the pool week 8 7th - September, time permitting.

Week 10:
Bookings remain open until classes are full.

Also this week certificates will be issued.

If the Booking system is confusing please come and talk to us on reception. We are hoping this new system will assist you all.

We take eftpos, cash or cheque. If paying by internet banking, money must be sighted in our account the next (banking) day after booking.

Term 3 lessons finish Saturday 26th September.

September/October School Holiday Blocks

We have 2 weeks of school holiday lessons available.
WK 1:
Monday 28th September to Friday 2nd October inclusive
WK 2:
Monday 5th - 9th
Swimmers can attend 1 or 2 weeks.*
These classes are an excellent way to boost any swimmers progress at any level. We will have most classes available except pre-school Duckling, Waterbaby Aquatot and Kingfish.
Donna and Mandi will be taking the classes.
Classes start at 9am and finish at 1pm.
Term 4 2009:
October 12th - Saturday 19th December

Damage to boys changing rooms.
We have had a real spate of vandalism in the boys changing rooms. Whilst this hasn't been as bad as last term. The last 3 weeks we have had a problem with toilet rolls being put down the toilet. We have also had a lot of piddling into the toilet roll holders etc. Please supervise your children as we are trying to be vigilant but we are missing the ‘rat bags', and so consequently we aren't getting on top of it. The sign that was screwed onto the wall has been pulled off and ruined.
If your child can be ‘mischief" could I ask you to take them home and get them changed there. Now that it's warming up this option is more viable.
Please try and be more proactive with this so we can stop this damage continuing.

Washing of Lycra
It is recommended that lycra products (togs and caps) are not washed with soap powder. If you want to wash them rinse them in cold water but do not expose them to sunlight. The swim suits we sell are ‘chorine resistant' but unfortunately our caps aren't.
If your child feels cold in the water encourage them to wear a thermal. As teachers we usually wear thermals they take the chill off the swimmers shoulders. Wetsuits are also a great idea but ensure that the arms are made of Lycra so they can turn with ease.

New Silicone Swim Caps
We have recently got in some silicone swim caps that come down right over the ear. They are especially good if you child is wearing ear plugs that need to be kept in place. They are $17- and are available in a range of colours at reception.

Make up classes
Makeups are available at Aquatot level and Waterbaby level for sickness only. If you are allocated a make up and then don't attend we do not re-allocate another make-up.

Cold Water Available

We always have cold water available free to anyone who brings a bottle or their own cup More eco friendly!!! Please do not use the thermal cups from the coffee machine. These are for heated coffee only.

Core Exercises
Term 3 of 2009 we were taking all swimmers for exercises the first 5 minutes of each class. This happened week 2 through to week 5. We are finding these are helping the children ‘engage' the correct muscles when swimming.

Little Charlie's arrived

Tuesday 18th August my daughter Jacqui and her partner Andy welcomed little Charlie into the world. He is a much loved little brother for Poppy. He weighed 8lbs 6oz and is very healthy.
We have 3 grandchildren now and are enjoying the experience. I am sure he will be a keen waterbaby in time.

Well I think that's all the news and information we wanted to pass on for now.

Please try and take your children to the pools outside of their lesson. This will progress their skills hugely and add to their confidence. I know you are all so busy but it's a cheap way to keep them busy and fit and healthy.
On behalf of us all here at Kapiti Learn To Swim
Mandi, Raewynn, Donna, Carol, Kate, Jacqui and Stephanie, enjoy the rest of the school term and the school holidays.
All the best

2009 Term 2
Hi to all families and swimmers.
Term 2 2009 has flown past as usual and it's unbelievable to think we are just over half way through! It's a very busy term for all of us here.
My father passed away earlier on this month and I have been away a far bit. I want to thank those of you affected by Dad's death. As Jacqui and I were away we arranged make-up classes on a Sunday.
Jacqui and I are also going to be away on the last Saturday July 4th. We have arranged a ‘make-up' lesson to be held on Sunday 21st June same time. So if you are in either Jacqui's or Mandi's classes on a Saturday you will have your class as usual Saturday 20th, Sunday 21st (wk 9) and the final lesson where you will be issued with a certificate will be Saturday 27th June. I am sorry about this. If you are unable to attend Sunday 21st please tell us and we will try and fit you in elsewhere. Many thanks for all you patience and support at this sad time for us both, it's very much appreciated! As usual we have a lot of news and dates to pass onto you.
This week is week 6 of a 10 week term. Assessments will start next week and run through until Saturday 13th of June. If you know your child will be away or unwell please ring us and we will arrange for them to be assessed on their return, if need be.

Changes to our Booking system
We are trying to ‘streamline' our booking system to ease the rush and make it easier for you. We do value any feedback you can give us as it's not easy to ‘please' everyone but we are trying. The format will be as follows:
Week 7:
All children will be assessed.
If your child is staying the same level their booking will be ‘rolled over' from Term 2 to Term 3 meaning that they will be attending the same day and time as they are currently. The booking will be duplicated.
Week 8:
All families will be given a notice with the details of level and time on it. At this stage please notify reception immediately if you intend missing Term 3 and also for any swimmer who wants to change time or day. We require this notification as soon as possible so we can then offer any spare classes to someone else, the following week. Any booking ‘rolled over' needs to be paid for this week for a confirmation. Any booking not paid for will be deleted and spot will become available for bookings week 9. July School Holiday block bookings can also be made this week.
Week 9:
Bookings open for all swimmers who are advancing up to another level and also for any swimmer wanting to change day or time. This is done on a first come first served basis. Starting Monday 22nd June at 8am. Saturday people unable to come in and book can email us for a Saturday class, then transfer the money via internet banking that day. All sessions available will be posted onto the web and also onto our notice board here at the pool week 8 15th - 20th June. They will be very similar to Term 2's sessions as we are ‘rolling over'.
Week 10:
Bookings will open up for any new swimmers and families who didn't confirm in Week 9.
Also this week certificates will be issued. If this is confusing please come and talk to us on reception. We will also have lots of signs up and around to remind you. We are hoping this new system will assist you all.
We take eftpos, cash or cheque. If paying by internet banking, money must be sighted in our account the next (banking) day after booking.

Finishing Dates Term 2 2009
Term 2 lessons finish Saturday 4th July for all Kimra and Sheryl's children.
Mandi and Jacqui's classes finish Saturday 27th June.
Term 3 lessons commence on Monday 20th July and run through until Saturday 26th September. This is a 10 week block.

July School holidays 2009

We have 2 x 1 week blocks available.
Wk 1: July 6th - 10th
Wk 2: July 13th - 17th
Cost is $60- per child per week.
These classes are an excellent way to boost any swimmers progress at any level. We will have most classes available except preschool Duckling, Waterbaby and Kingfish.
Donna and Mandi will be taking the classes. Classes start at 9am and finish at 1pm.

Damage to boys changing rooms.
We have had a real spate of vandalism in the boys changing rooms. For the last 3 weeks it has been constant. Please supervise your children as we are being very vigilant but as we can be busy with exercises we are not getting on top of it. The sign that was screwed on the wall have been pulled off and ruined. We are also finding children are throwing clothes over the back. The toilet roll holder has been snapped off 3 times this term. Tuesday nights have been particularly bad. If you child can be ‘mischief" could I ask you to take them home and get them changed there. Not ideal I know but the cost involved here is getting out of hand.

Make up classes
Makeups are available at Aquatot level and Waterbaby level for sickness only. If you are allocated a make up and then don't attend we can not allocate We don't do make-ups for make-ups. The is an allowance of 1 makeup per child per term for sickness only. For all other levels we do not offer make-ups.

Cold Water Available
We always have cold water available free to anyone who brings a bottle or their own cup More eco friendly!!! Please do not use the thermal cups from the coffee machine. These are for heated coffee only.

2009 Term1
Hi to all families and swimmers.
Term 1 2009 has flown past as usual and it's hard to believe that Easter is here in 3 weeks. It seems the older you get the quicker it goes!
It's a busy time of the year and at this stage it's hard to believe that winter is around the corner. We've certainly had some hot temperatures and some lovely warm evenings! Long may it last!
As usual we have a lot of news and dates to pass onto you.
This week is week 8 of a 10 week Term.
Assessments will start this week and run through until Friday 27th March. If you know your child will be away or unwell please ring us and we will arrange for them to be assessed on their return, if need be.
Please remember that all children progress at a different rate based on a number of factors.
If your child has to repeat a level it only means that some skills need to be consolidated before moving on. Without these skills the next level is unachievable.
History tells us that if a swimmer is moved on prior to them consolidating the previous level, it is very difficult for them to master the skills required. This is not good for their confidence and certainly not good for their progress.
It is also important to remember that children's progress is based on their physical and emotional development and some very young swimmers feel terribly ‘pressured' swimming with older children even if they have in the past displayed skills beyond their years.
For this reason there is only so much they will achieve ‘until their brain has caught up physically.
It is important that you don't pressure your little preschooler for this reason. It is not possible to build on their skill base when they are emotionally unable to comprehend the programme.

BOOKING WEEK

We will be taking bookings from Saturday 28th March for all existing customers. We will be here from 8am until 5pm. We strongly advise you to book as soon as you are able to so you can secure a place that suits you. With the days getting shorter (in terms of daylight and temperature) we don't have the places available that we do in Term's 4 and 1. Consequently the classes fill very quickly. Payment must be received when you book otherwise we can not process your booking due to demand. We take eftpos, cash or cheque. If paying by internet banking, money must be sighted in our account the next (banking) day after booking, Otherwise the booking does not stand.
To all our regular Saturday swimmers, ensure that you book on Saturday 28th to ensure your spot
The system is a first in first served.

Finishing Dates 2008

Term 1 lessons finish Thursday 9th April. Due to Easter there will be NO lessons held on Friday 10th, or Saturday 11th.

Lost property

We have a small amount of lost property this term. Our lost property is located on the left hand side of the front doors coming in.Please look through it to see if anything belongs to your children. At the end of each term we take any unclaimed items to the Salvation Army.

Washing of Lycra
It is recommended that lycra products (togs and caps) are not washed with soap powder. If you want to wash them rinse them in cold water but do not expose them to sunlight. The swim suits we sell are ‘chorine resistant' but unfortunately our caps aren't. f your child feels cold in the water encourage them to wear a thermal. Adult Classes
We will be running these classes again Term 2 2009.
If you would prefer we offer one on one lesson's for those swimmers who already have some skills.
One on One lessons are also very good if the swimmer has suffered some trauma based around water and or is self conscious. There's no time like the present to Learn To Swim and get fit. We like our Adult learners to go and have a practice between lessons as this makes a huge difference to progress and confidence.

Correct Equipment
If you have a child who is suffering with leaking goggles, it may be that they are not fitted properly or are of inferior quality. As teachers it can be time consuming and frustrating if a swimmer is constantly ‘emptying' out goggles.

Watch your children!
There have been a few acts of vandalism of late. My husbands' digger has been tampered with. The fuel cap has been removed and is missing and consequently water has got in. He has also had the pin on the bucket removed and lost. There has also had some graffiti on some signs in the changing room. I know kids will be kids but we would appreciate it, if you could keep an eye on your children when they are here. Also it would be helpful if you you could talk to them about respecting other people's property. We have also had to repair the pool gate twice now as children are standing on it too open it, and are swinging on it. The lock is supposed to be activated by parents only.

Core Exercises
Term 4 of 2008 we were taking all swimmers for exercises the first 5 minutes of each class. We have not continued this term and found that swimmers aren't engaging their ‘core' as well without them. Because of this we have decided to start these up again next term.

Swimmers Fitness
It is highly recommended that you encourage your children to join a team sport over the winter months. The benefits are huge in terms of team spirit and fitness. Swimming is an excellent stamina base for any kind of sport. So it makes sense that all swimmers stay active in any way they can. Testimonials'
As we are currently recreating our website at present. If any of you are willing it would be great if you could write us a testimonial to place on our website.  It would only need to be brief. Just maybe half a page on your experience of the Swim School and how you feel your child has progressed. That would be neat and much appreciated! It's always nice to read other people's experiences so that you can get a picture of the way we operate and the feel of the Swim School before you enrol.

Well that's all the news for now.
On behalf of us all of us here at Kapiti Learn To Swim. Have a lovely relaxing Easter and enjoy the April School holidays.

All the best
